Patrick Hicks

Patrick Hicks is the author of several books, including Adoptable, This London, The Collector of Names, and The Commandant of Lubizec. His work has appeared on NPR, The PBS NewsHour, and in literary journals across America. He has received grants from the Bush Artist Foundation, the Loft Literary Center, and the South Dakota Arts Council. He is the Writer-in-Residence at Augustana University as well as a faculty member at the MFA program at Sierra Nevada College. 

Workshop: “Making Fiction out of Nonfiction” 

We will discuss how historical research can make fiction come alive. How does the past shape the literary present? Through a short craft talk, and a variety of writing exercises, we will explore how fictional worlds can feel more authentic for the reader if research is conducted. How does nonfiction influence fiction?
